Co-op terms while you study

Questions

Canada: your questions answered

What is the SDS route and am I eligible?

The Student Direct Stream is a faster study-permit stream for Indian students who hold a Letter of Acceptance, a GIC of CAD 20,635, paid first-year tuition and IELTS 6.0 in each band. If you meet those, processing is usually quicker and more predictable. We confirm your eligibility before you apply.

What is a GIC and why do I need one?

A Guaranteed Investment Certificate is your own living-cost money, about CAD 20,635, held in a Canadian account and released to you in instalments after you arrive. It is the financial proof the study permit requires under SDS. We guide you through opening it.

Can I work while I study in Canada?

Yes. On a study permit you can typically work part-time during term and full-time in scheduled breaks, and many programmes include paid co-op terms. This helps with living costs and builds local experience while you study.

What is the post-study work permit?

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) lets eligible graduates work in Canada after finishing an approved programme, for a period linked to your course length. It is a way to gain practical experience in your field after graduation.
